Understanding Protocols: Structure & Importance
Why Structure Matters
Structure is how you learn the language. A protocol holds one thing steady, the amount, the rhythm, the conditions you take it in, so that everything else becomes visible. Without a baseline, every shift reads as noise. With one, change has somewhere to show up.
Early in this work most people do not yet have words for what they are feeling. The experience arrives faster than the ability to name it, and the mind rushes in to explain what the body has not finished saying. A protocol slows that down. Returning to the same frame again and again is what lets you notice what actually repeated, what genuinely shifted, and what was only a story you told yourself about the day. This is where innerstanding gets built. It is unglamorous, and it is the work.
But structure is scaffolding, not the building. The aim was never adherence. It was fluency. You follow a protocol until you no longer need to consult it, because by then the knowing has moved off the page and into you, and what you are relating to is not a set of instructions but the medicine itself. Structure is how you get there. It is not where you stay.
Flexibility Within Form
Every protocol we offer is a starting point, not a destination. Your body, your circumstances, and your intentions are your own, and the form will need to bend to meet them. Adapting it is not a deviation from the practice. It is the practice. The only real discipline is to change one thing at a time. Adjust the amount, the rhythm, and the setting all at once and you have learned nothing except that something is different.
When you do change something, keep your noticing steady. Give the adjustment enough cycles to show you what it does before you decide what it means. Most of what arrives in this work arrives slowly and in retrospect, and a change judged after a single sitting is usually being judged by the mind rather than the body. Hold the same quality of attention, and let the one variable be the only variable.
There is a question worth asking every time you feel pulled to change your protocol: is this discernment, or is this avoidance? Both feel like intuition from the inside. One is your body telling you the form no longer fits. The other is the part of you that would rather not meet what has been showing up. No one else can tell you which is which, and being willing to ask is most of the answer.
The further you go, the less you will consult the protocol at all. That is the intended direction. Form is meant to be adapted, then outgrown, and eventually forgotten, until what remains is a direct and intuitive relating between you and the medicine. Innerstanding what this practice does for your life is a great foundation to build from.
